we are friends vol. 5 single artwork

client: deadmau5

role: art director

discipline: single artwork

Overview:

For the "We Are Friends Vol. 5" mixtape by Mau5trap, I was tasked with creating artwork that visually connected with Deadmau5’s "Saved" release while establishing a distinct identity for the project. The challenge was to balance continuity between the two releases while giving this mixtape its own visual appeal. I designed the number '5' using intricately crafted smoke wisps, drawing on the ethereal, smoky theme from the previous project.

Responsibilities:

  • Design & Art Direction: I developed the artwork by extending the visual narrative from Deadmau5’s "Saved" release, using a smoke motif to craft the number '5' while ensuring the design had its own identity. This created a subtle connection between the two projects while allowing each to stand alone visually.

  • Project & Stakeholder Management: I managed the entire production process from concept through to completion. This included coordinating closely with the Mau5trap team to gather feedback and ensure the creative direction aligned with the brand’s overall aesthetic.

  • Production & Brand Consistency: Throughout the project, I ensured that all elements of the artwork remained consistent with Mau5trap's innovative brand image. From refining the smoke design to ensuring the final output matched production specifications, I oversaw the technical and creative aspects of the artwork.

Outcome:

The final artwork was a visually unified yet distinct representation of Mau5trap’s brand, successfully tying "We Are Friends Vol. 5" to Deadmau5's "Saved" release. The client expressed great enthusiasm for the design, appreciating how it both stood out and connected to the broader visual narrative of the label.
